Cutting, sewing and stitching clothes with scissor in hands, measurement tape around neck and listening radio, all these activities are generally witnessed to be done by tailors at their shops. Tailors of Pakistan play a very imperative role in our society. It was the time when only elite class used to wear tailor-made clothes, whereas middle and lower class used to sew on their own. Now, it has become a trend in both elite and middle class, to send their clothes to tailor and get them stitched.
In this profession, there are no boundaries for learning this art. Primarily, men and women sew clothes then they appoint and train young people who later assist them to enlarge their business. The owner or eldest tailor concede as master or master sahib who takes orders from customers, discern every design with concentration then proceed it to their colleagues or shagird.
But female tailors work and take orders in their homes; most of them, open learning centers where they teach young girls or their own daughters. After apprenticing, those young girls practice; it helps them when they go to their husband’s house and sometimes in becoming the bread earner when later facing some hardships or financial problems. Their tailor art help them in earning and relinquish affluence to pass from these situation. The two most preeminent institutes where the sewing classes provided are; Rangoonwala and Memon Foundation. Women from different areas go and learn the art of tailoring.
We all assume, to whom we should prefer to give clothes – a man or woman? Undoubtedly, both of them are good but we all know that men are men. Like every profession, male tailors are better than female one. They both have incomparable style and perfection; you get the best results when you compare each other sewing. A part from potential, male tailors have enough. After reaching at one time females get tired as they do their house hold activities too although males can serve the whole night because they only do their tailor work.
To become a female tailor is always helpful in a way that everything is costly so they can sew curtains, bed sheets and other stuff to decorate homes through their own designs. Some tailors don’t get your point so it is an opportunity to show whatever has in your mind using tailoring art.
There are many seasons in which tailors’ rates are on hype, we also call them as earning season or peak season. Like Eid festival, wedding months (before Ramadan and after Eid), summer and winter season, Christmas, Hindus festivals and many more. During these seasons, their booking start before two to three months and at the end, they don’t take clothes for every customer; in urgency they only take orders of their regular customers. In those days, tailor’s job gets tougher as they work the whole night and sleep hardly for four to five hours.
The biggest advantage of having a good tailor is, you just have to show the picture of a designer dress and he or she can make exactly the same. Further, you don’t need to buy designer clothes. Secondly, some of them just take your clothes and they buy the accessories required to further embellish on their own and charge together with stitching in the end. They also provide the facility of altering if their customer during trial finds any problem.
The other interesting thing which urges you to think about them is that they don’t take loan in the morning. For instance, if you go to pick your dress in the morning and say I will give you money with my other dresses in the end so they refuse to give you and reply “ baji… subh k waqt udhar nhi.” Because, it’s their belief that if they start their work with loan so they spend their whole day in taking loans.
There are still people in Pakistan whose house run on this art. They earn, fill their family stomach and fulfilling their other expenses. So, tailors’ profession is always benevolent helps everyone who is in need, have financial problems and want to adopt it as a business.
